Sleeve Gastrectomy:
Our Innovative Technique

Sleeve gastrectomy has been an approved procedure in France since 2008 by the Haute Autorité de Santé. Its effectiveness is based on two key mechanisms:

  • A mechanical restriction through reduction of stomach volume.
  • A hormonal effect (decrease in ghrelin, increase in GLP-1 and PYY) due to the removal of a portion of hormone-producing tissue.

An Evolving, Minimally Invasive Technique

This longitudinal resection of two-thirds of the stomach combines metabolic efficacy with moderate complexity. Our team has revolutionized its approach:

  • Technological evolution: From 7 trocars down to only 3, either via laparoscopy or robotic surgery, and now to a single-port technique (only one scar).
  •  Key innovations:  Curved instruments and flexible cameras.

Procedure Overview

  • Hospital admission the day before surgery
  • Operation performed in the morning
  • Usually no need for drains or gastric tubes
  • 48-hour fasting period
  • Food reintroduction after 2 days following a control assessment
  • Discharge after 3 to 4 days with pain relief, gastric protection, and anticoagulant treatment

Advantages and Rigorous Follow-Up

  • Benefits: Less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery.
  • Structured clinical pathway and standardized post-operative follow-up protocol
    • Consultations at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months
    • - Full assessment at 3 months and 1 year in a day hospital setting
    • Lifetime follow-up every 12 months

Vigilance and Complications

Risks (bleeding, leakage – 1 to 5% of cases) are managed through:

  • Minimally invasive treatments (radiology, advanced interventional endoscopy)
  • Surgical revisions are rare.
